Thames Hospice Superstore

Refurbishment and alterations of an existing Warehouse to form Thames Hospice’s Superstore

Sector: Commercial, Community
Client: Thames Hospice
Value range: Under £500k

This project involved transforming a former retail space into Thames Hospice’s first superstore. Morris + Blunt acted as both designer and contractor, collaborating closely with the client to evolve the design to fit their vision.

Scope of work

Overview:

  • Thames Hospice engaged Morris + Blunt to convert an existing two-unit retail space into its first flagship superstore. Morris + Blunt created a cohesive retail experience that integrates varied shopping spaces, a café, and a dedicated upcycling area. As both designer and contractor, Morris + Blunt collaborated with the client to ensure the design met their vision.

Design Highlights:

  • Creation of designated product zones for varied retail categories, including Men’s and Women’s clothing, books, furniture, and children’s items, using freestanding walls and custom displays.
  • A new café area with a kitchen, café servery, public restrooms, and adaptable seating arrangements for a welcoming environment.
  • Enhanced building performance with bead insulation in the 70mm cavity walls, new ventilation, power, and upgraded fire safety systems tailored to the retail and storage demands of the superstore.

Project Highlights:

  • The existing structure—two separate retail units—was converted into an open-plan, single-level retail area by removing sections of the central wall.
  • Storage needs were addressed with a new mezzanine floor and staircase, creating a dedicated “Home Studio/Repair Shed” for upcycling furniture. A brand-aligned feature wall with fire-retardant timber and sky wallpaper was added.
  • New entrances, fire exits, bead insulation, and upgrades to ventilation, power, and fire safety systems were incorporated.
  • The café design included a kitchen, public toilets, and a versatile seating area for various dining experiences.
  • Separate zones for retail and staff areas were integrated with movable walls, custom installations, and display systems tailored to the client’s needs.

The completed superstore supports Thames Hospice’s mission, with a thoughtfully zoned retail layout and branded, community-friendly spaces. Custom till points, changing rooms, and a café add to the customer experience, creating a dynamic, inviting space that balances retail needs with an engaging atmosphere.
