Sector: Education
Client: Wokingham Borough Council
Value range: Under £500k

A refurbishment and alteration project to convert the existing servery and 6th form area into an updated servery and dining room.

Scope of work

Demolition and Strip Out:

  • Full demolition and strip out of the existing areas, including suspended ceilings, structural partitions, floor coverings, doors, WC cubicles, and sanitaryware.
  • Safe removal and disposal of asbestos in specified areas.

Construction and Modifications:

  • Installation of studwork partitions to create a sitting area and WC cubicles with FD30 fire-rated doors, along with new skirting and architraves.
  • Modification of original WCs to have individual unisex cubicles.
  • Installation of new wood-effect vinyl flooring throughout the building, with concrete-effect flooring around the perimeter and WCs.

Electrical and Mechanical Upgrades:

  • Removal of all existing electrical items and installation of updated lights, sockets, switches, data, and access control throughout the servery and dining room.
  • Mechanical works to modify the individual cubicles with new Armitage sanitary items.
  • Adjustment of ceiling services within the servery to create a more open plan ceiling.

Additional Installations:

  • Installation of a new white powder-coated fire-rated kitchen shutter in the servery, connected to the existing fire alarm.
  • Installation of new external doors and sliding doors around the perimeter of the building to provide more access and fire escapes, including disabled access via new ramps.
  • Installation of flood barrier defences.

External Works:

  • Installation of new tarmac with an ACO channel drainage system leading into the updated servery.
  • Construction of a metal canopy with two skylights.

Challenges and Considerations:

  • The project was completed within a very tight timescale during the summer period.
  • Thorough planning and strict adherence to health and safety procedures were essential to ensure the project’s success.

The project was meticulously planned and executed by Morris + Blunt, ensuring all health and safety procedures were followed. The updated dining hall and servery now provide an improved facility for students during their lunch times and breaks.
