Transformation of existing spaces to create a new Games Room and upgraded Atrium.

Significant renovation and structural enhancement to transform an existing space into a new games room connected to the main atrium. The project created a welcoming area for relaxation, study and leisure, combining bespoke oak features with substantial structural upgrades while preserving the building’s historic character.

Scope of work

Structural Modifications & Enhancements:

  • Major structural alterations to the atrium to achieve a more open and functional layout.
  • Formation of a structural opening for the installation of a new oak-glazed sliding door, creating a seamless connection between the atrium and the games room.
  • Formation of a new entrance door within the games room to improve accessibility and circulation.

Windows & Doors:

  • Installation of bespoke oak FD60-rated viewing windows to the first-floor dormitory corridors overlooking the atrium.
  • Replacement of existing timber windows with high-quality, energy-efficient timber units to maintain the traditional aesthetic while improving performance.

Interior Finishes & Bespoke Joinery:

  • Oak cladding fixed to the atrium walls to a height of 1.8 m, with full-height oak cladding applied within the games room for visual continuity.
  • Custom-built oak TV unit installed as a central feature within the games room.
  • Bespoke oak workbenches fitted to provide students with flexible space for leisure and study.

Flooring & Heating:

  • Removal of all existing floor slabs within the games room and construction of a new upgraded ground floor slab to accommodate underfloor heating.
  • Installation of solid oak parquet flooring laid in a herringbone pattern within the games room.
  • High-quality carpet fitted throughout the atrium, with perimeter trench heating recessed into the floor.

Electrical & Mechanical Upgrades:

  • Upgraded lighting and power points throughout the atrium and games room to meet modern use requirements.

Outcome:

  • A fully transformed atrium and games room that blends Eton College’s traditional architecture with modern comfort, functionality and bespoke detailing.
